JAY – Jay police went door-to-door last week in the Church Street area trying to determine how a granite monument was broken in a nearby playground.

Police Sgt. Charles Keene and other officers spoke to several children between the ages 6 and 11 who allegedly admitted to having some contact with the monument since it was installed in July, Police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

The top part of the monument had a large chunk broken out of it.

The stone is dedicated in memory of a teenage mother who died in a tragic fire and to firefighters who rescued her toddler from the burning apartment building that was on the site in 1976.

White said a number of children admitted kicking the stone, bumping into it and one even allegedly hit it with a baseball bat causing it to fall on the ground several times.

It is unknown what incident caused a chunk to break off or if all of them collectively caused it, White said.

The case was turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review, White said.

An 11-year-old girl broke her leg last week when she tried to stand the stone up and it fell back on her.
