WILTON – The trestle bridge on Cemetery Road was hit Sunday for the third time in five weeks by an oversized truck. The trestle is posted for 11-foot to 11-foot, 4-inch clearance depending on where one looks.

On Sunday, a Ryder truck that was 12-feet, 6 inches high attempted to go under the trestle, Wilton police officer Ed Leahy said. Leahy lives near the bridge.

A cement truck and a truck hauling an excavator have recently hit the bridge.

Each time it is struck, the bridge that extends 30 feet over the road appears to move.

It was 6 to 8 inches off its pad from a hit in early October, but it was pushed back on several inches when it was hit Sunday.

There are signs posted at the beginning of each end of the road noting 11-foot, 4-inch clearance and low clearance. Signs near the bridge and on the bridge state 11-foot clearance.

There is a sign at the entrance to Cemetery Road from routes 2 and 4 that also states “no thru trucks.” However, there is no sign indicating “no thru trucks” when a driver enters from Main Street. And if a driver was coming from downtown Wilton on Main Street to Cemetery Road, there are tree branches that appear to hide the sign until a driver is nearly going by it.

Scott Ramsay, a representative of the Department of Conservation, said his department is worried about the trestle being hit while someone is on the bridge traveling on the 14.5-mile rail-trail that runs through Wilton from Jay and Farmington.
