FARMINGTON – The Franklin Memorial Hospital Physical Therapy department is offering a free backpack screening from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Stanley Health Center at the hospital. This is being held in coordination with National Physical Therapy Month.
The purpose of the program is to educate students and parents about the health issues associated with heavy backpacks and to inform them about backpack safety. The program is for students who are required to carry more books and heavier loads throughout the day.
According to Susan Davidson, the physical therapist who will provide the screening, “Recent research reports that a majority of today’s students are carrying more than the recommended weight levels and sustaining injury that may last a lifetime.
Signs of improper backpack use and weight can include stooped posture, tingling arms, aching shoulders and weakened muscles.
Students attending the screening should bring their backpacks with their usual load. Backpacks will be checked for size and weight, and there will be demonstrations on how to lift and carry backpacks correctly. Informational materials on backpack selection and safety, as well as refreshments will be available.
National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated each October to increase awareness about physical therapy. Physical therapists can be found advising on proper posture and body motion in the workplace, treating sports injuries, consulting on fitness, administering physical therapy and much more.
