LEWISTON -The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society of Auburn held its third annual “Walk for a Humane Community” on Oct. 5 at Railroad Park.

Walkers were asked to collect pledges and generated more than $6,000 in proceeds, designated to build the new shelter’s “Almost Home” program. The program is a project that, in conjunction with the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, will provide temporary care and shelter for pets of victims of domestic violence.

The Humane Society has purchased a parcel of land on Strawberry Avenue as the site for the new shelter. The shelter in Auburn was built 30 years ago to care for 1,000 animals a year. Between 3,600 and 4,000 homeless, abandoned and abused animals come through its doors each year.

The new shelter will be larger, more people and animal-friendly and centrally located so adoptable animals will have a better chance at finding the perfect family. The shelter serves 10 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a total population of more than 90,000 people.

Those interested in learning more about the new shelter can call 786-4713. Anyone who is interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can visit the shelter at 3312 Hotel Road in Auburn or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
