SKOWHEGAN – The sixth annual Special Olympic equestrian competition was held Oct. 4 at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds.

More than 100 riders from 15 therapeutic riding programs throughout the state arrived, undaunted as the clouds gathered and a cold wind blew through the arena. The rain started as the opening ceremonies ended, but the competition continued.

The Olympians competed in three classes:s showmanship, English/Western and working trails.

The healing horses therapeutic riding program at the Triple J Farm in Bowdoin was represented by 11 Special Olympians this year. Special Olympics coach and owner Jan Smith, assisted by volunteers Shirley Hymer and Debi Wilkey, instructed and coached the riders all spring and summer in preparation. The riders were Ricky Sturtevant, Dale Hafford, Brett Cowallis, Dana Albright, John Hughes, Kelly Mosco, Dawn Sullivan, Erine Baker, Michael Barter, Sonjia Langlois and Michael Arsenault.
