Eight committee members were sworn in Wednesday.

SUMNER – Comprehensive Plan organizer Rhea Kennelly gave committee members assignments Wednesday night to rework different phases of Sumner’s 16-year-old Comprehensive Plan.

Official members who were sworn in are Rhea Kennelly, Bob Walder, Arlena Silverman, Lena Pratt, Edwin Hinshaw, Mary Ann Haxton, Duke Harrington and Henri Arsenault.

Committee members came up with the need to update the ordinances, have more proactive interest in the destiny of Sumner and to raise the awareness of the role agriculture plays in Sumner.

Haxton asked what she should tell people who question why the plan is being rewritten. Hinshaw replied, “We (Sumner) must take charge of our physical planning and budgeting or be dictated to by outside sources.”

The components assigned to members were: municipal services including emergency preparedness, land use, natural resources, demographic characteristics, economy, implementation and continuing planning policy and a historical and archeological component. Rewriting the mission statement and editing the old questionnaire were also assigned.

The next meeting of the Comprehensive Plan will be on Nov. 19 with a general discussion on the By-Laws and questionnaire. Election of officers will also take place. As always, interested people are invited to attend.
