JAY – Quarterback Justine Wells threw three touchdown passes in the first half as Jay scored 42 points in the first 24 minutes en route to an easy 48-0 rout against winless Traip Academy in a Class C Campbell Conference football game Friday night.

Jay (6-1), which has already qualified for the postseason, proved to be equally stingy on defense as the Rangers simply unable to generate any consistency. The first three series resulted in three plays each and out for Traip.

The Tigers had excellent field position early and Wells and company made it pay off. Jay scored scored on seven of its’ eight possessions in the first half.

“We were surprised by the quick start,” Wells said. “Our first drive did fail, but we realized that we couldn’t play flat. Traip hasn’t been too successful, but neither were we last year. We knew Traip would come out and play hard, so we had to play the same way.”

Traip intercepted Wells on his first pass, however, it simply prolonged the inevitable. Wells (6 of 10 for 150 yards) hooked up with a wide-open Mike Kelvey for a 38-yard TD. Lineman A.J. Nelson kicked the first of his seven PATs.

The Tigers Shawn Jacques cut back across the grain for a 24-yard TD run. Jay quickly established its running game with Kyle Richards (59 yards, 10 rushes), Austin Ouellette (34) and Jacques (36). The Jay starters only played two quarters.

“We took advantage of our running,” Ouellette said. “Traip was overpersuing. They were fast, but they didn’t know our plays. Our offensive line really blocked well and the defense stepped up.”

Traip (0-7) could not run the ball effectively, and QB Brandon Paxton was pressured by the Tigers rush. The biggest play from scrimmage was a 38-yard run by Andrew Cutts.

The Rangers gained 110 yards on offense.

Ouellette caught a 37-yard TD pass and Richards scored on a 28-yard screen pass.

Austin Ouellette fell on a fumble in the end zone and Joel Ouellette ran in a 21-yard TD.

In the third quarter, Ryan Bourassa scored from 12 yards out.
