I am very fortunate to have a fine primary care physician. He knows who I am and exactly what I need.

Herein lies my problem. The medical group that he belongs to does not allow me, and others, to venture outside “The Group.” It is a pure monopoly.

Recently, I was referred to a specialist. The office would not schedule an appointment that fit into my schedule and was rude. I called my doctor’s office and told them that I wanted to see a different specialists. I didn’t hear from them, so I made my own arrangements.

I called my doctor again for the necessary referral and was told that I had to get the OK from somebody in the group, who I did not know existed. Otherwise, I couldn’t see the specialist.

I am going to see the doctor of my choice whether “The Group” likes it or not. These medical groups are not going to run my life. I am suggesting that we all unite and find a group of good physicians, who have us in mind and not the bottom line.
