CHICAGO – Tuomo Ruutu scored his first NHL goal to lead the Chicago Blackhawks past the Nashville Predators 3-1 on Sunday.
The rookie scored during a power play early in the third period to break a 1-all tie and help Chicago end a four-game losing streak.
Tyler Arnason scored late in the second period for the Blackhawks, who got an insurance goal from Kyle Calder with 6:10 left in regulation.
Stars 3, Wild 1
DALLAS – Stu Barnes scored two goals 20 seconds apart and Bill Guerin added another a few minutes later, leading the Dallas Stars past the Minnesota Wild 3-1 Sunday night.
Barnes’ outburst came so quickly that the arena announcer was still saying he’d just scored his fourth goal of the season when Barnes plugged in his fifth. This was his second two-goal game of the season.
and it matches Ilya Kovalchuk for the league lead.
Barnes had only 13 goals all of last season, just two in 13 games with Dallas.
Guerin scored 4:27 later by redirecting a long shot from Sergei Zubov. It was upheld after a long video review examined whether Guerin’s stick was too high.
The goal came early in an extended five-on-three advantage for Dallas. It became essentially a five-on-two soon after when Brad Bombardir lost his stick. But the Wild killed the remaining penalty time and goaltender Manny Fernandez wasn’t beaten again. He made 27 saves.
The offensively challenged Wild did little to challenge Stars goaltender Marty Turco, taking just 11 shots. Through six games, Minnesota has scored two goals or less five times, which can only help the negotiating stance of holdout Marian Gaborik.
The Wild took only two shots in the first period and one in the second. They went more than 25 minutes between the second and third shots after taking only two in the third period of their previous game.
Minnesota’s Matt Johnson probably got in more shots during two third-period brawls with Dallas’ John Erskine than his teammates did at Turco.
The Wild actually led 1-0, scoring on their second shot. Christoph Brandner got it by redirecting a shot by Pierre-Marc Bouchard midway through the first period. The power-play goal came at the tail end of a span that saw the teams play five-on-four, four-on-four, four-on-three, five-on-three, then back to five-on-four.
Notes: Barnes’ two-goal burst was only the third-fastest in team history. Bill Goldsworthy scored 7 seconds apart in 1971 and Roman Lyashenko did it 10 seconds apart in 2000. … Minnesota played its first back-to-back of the season. The Wild tied Vancouver at home Saturday night. … Dallas RW Jere Lehtinen missed a fourth straight game because of back spasms. … Jason Arnott assisted on both of Barnes’ goals.
