LEWISTON – Mayoral candidate Charles Soule and Council President Renee Bernier squared off Tuesday night, with Bernier demanding Soule leave council chambers.

“I will yield, but I think these things need to be brought up,” Soule said.

Councilors were discussing a plan to purchase an apartment building at 480-482 Canal St. Tuesday night. When Bernier, in charge of Tuesday’s meeting in Mayor Larry Raymond’s absence, opened the floor public comment, Soule stepped forward.

He questioned councilors about purchasing property that paid $7,500 property taxes last year.

“It concerns me that we are taking another piece of property off of the taxpayer rolls,” Soule said.

Bernier objected when Soule began discussing the city’s first quarter financial results.

“We have an opportunity for you to discuss this later on the agenda, but now we are going to stick to the task at hand,” Bernier said.

Soule refused and continued talking. Bernier then demanded that Soule sit down, and when he didn’t, asked him to leave.

“I’m sorry that had to happen,” Bernier said.
