I believe that a casino would be too much for Maine right now.

In all, I am opposed to a Vegas-style casino being built in our quaint, little state. I may be in a minority, but I hope to persuade you to vote against the casino question.

Why would I be against 10,000 new jobs for Maine citizens? For one thing, the jobs are not all desirable. These jobs will have odd hours and may be only a little fix for the 30,000 unemployed Maine workers. There are no career paths to a better place; you are assigned a job and you do it.

People across the state are saying that there will be $100 million donated to schools every year from the slot machines. The casino will attract more tourists, who will be more likely to drive drunk and endanger the public. There will need to be a 24-hour police patrolling the area and the revenue may be squandered on the cost to make sure these gamblers don’t endanger themselves and the people around them.

With a casino, inevitably there will be a higher crime rate and more drugs on the streets. Does this sound like what you want Maine to become? It sure doesn’t to me.

Many say that the Native American tribes will benefit immensely from having the casino. That is not totally true. Most of the money will go to the casino’s financial backers.
