OAKLAND – Allyson Thomas, Telma Rosquete and Elyse Conant all scored goals for Edward Little as the Red Eddies shook off Messalonskee, 2-1, in overtime in an Eastern A girls’ soccer preliminary Wednesday.

Ninth-ranked EL (8-5-2) advances to Friday’s 4 p.m. game against top-seeded Lewiston.

After four overtime periods, the two squads had to settle things with a shootout. Thomas, Rosquete and Conant scored to give EL the edge in penalty kicks, 4-2. EL keeper Brittney French came up with some key stops to hold off the Eagles.

EL’s Elizabeth Esponnette and Messalonskee’s Chelsea Thibeault each traded first-half tallies.

Field hockey

Leavitt 2, Cape Elizabeth 1

TURNER – It took two scoreless halves, two scoreless overtimes and 5 corners before Jessica Palodino found the back of the net to give Leavitt a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cape Elizabeth in the Class C field hockey playoffs Wednesday.

With the victory, Leavitt coach Wanda Ward-MacLean earned her 200th coaching win and was honored for her accomplishment with a plaque in honor.

After Cape Elizabeth scored on a corner shot, senior captain Laura Pratt scored for Leavitt to prolong the contest. Palodino’s game-winner came with an assist by Jennifer Gondeck.

Boys’ soccer

Hall-Dale 1, Lisbon 0

FARMINGDALE – Hall-Dale’s Alex Doherty socred the only goal of the game on a pass from Dan Voner as the Bulldogs shutout Lisbon 1-0 in a Western Class boys’ soccer playoff game Wednesday.

Lisbon’s Mike Wilkins made seven saves in net.

Women’s soccer

Bates 2, UMF 0

FARMINGTON – Catherine Crosbby scored in the first half and Kim Alexander scored in the second half as Bates beats UMaine-Farmington 2-0.

Crosby also had an assist in for the Bobcats. UMF’s goalie Patty Boutin stopped 10 shots in the lossing effort.

USM 4, Framingham State 0

GORHAM — Sophomore Jen Mason netted the decisive goal in the opening minutes of the first half, and the University of Southern Maine Huskies erupted for three second-half goals en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Framingham State College Rams in Little East Conference field hockey Wednesday afternoon at the Paula Hodgdon Field.

Triumphant in four consecutive outings, USM improved to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference while Framingham State slipped to 5-6 and 3-5.

Bowdoin 6, UMF 0

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Collen Mcdonald scored on a pass from Marissa O’Neil for the first goal as the Polar Bears crushed the Beavers 6-0 in a field hockey game Wednesday.

Bowdoin got two goals from Colleen Mcdonald and Christi Gannon.

The Beavers’ goalie Ashleigh Biette made seven saves.
