LEWISTON – The International Order of Rainbow for Girls delivered 16,870 pounds of can tabs at the Louis Mack Recycling Depot in Portland during the summer. That amounts to 8.44 tons, or 21,981,610 individual tabs. There were so many tabs collected this year that a tractor trailer was used to deliver them.
The money raised is donated to the Shrine hospitals. Grand Worthy Adviser Kelly Clough of Gorham presented a check in for $6,184.74 to the Shrine hospital in Springfield, Mass., in July. The donation is designated for the wheelchair fund.
In addition to the tabs, approximately 125,000 Campbell labels were delivered for the educational programs at the hospital. This is the 13th year that the Rainbow Girls of Maine have coordinated the project.
Organizations and businesses all over Maine save tabs and labels for the project and have helped the project grow each year. Anyone who has tabs or Campbell labels to donate can drop them off at the Kora Shrine Temple, 11 Sabattus St., or call 782-6831.
