ORONO – Ron Whitcomb completed 19 of 31 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns to Christian Pereira on Saturday to lead Maine to a 20-13 victory over James Madison.

Whitcomb engineered two scoring drives for 10 points during the last 2:39 of the first half, helping the Black Bears erase a 13-7 deficit for a 17-13 halftime lead.

Maine (5-3, 4-2 Atlantic 10) held James Madison (4-4, 3-3) scoreless over the final 37 minutes and ate up the clock as Marcus Williams finished with 117 yards on 31 carries.

The teams swapped first-quarter touchdowns as Maine took the lead on a 7-yard TD toss from Whitcomb to Pereira, before James Madison scored on a 40-yard pass from Matt LeZotte to Alvin Banks.

The Dukes made it 13-7 on David Rabil’s field goals of 38 and 23 yards. But Mellow kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:39 left in the half, and Whitcomb threw 14 yards to Pereira with 36 seconds left to put Maine ahead to stay.

Bowdoin 12

BRUNSWICK – Brennan Carney threw two touchdown passes and Wesleyan threw 283 passing yards to defeat Bowdoin 21-12 in New England Small College Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The game remained scoreless until midway through the second quarter when Nick DiNardo handed off to Joel Pratt for a 20-yard run, setting up Andrew Stuerzel for the touchdown.

The Cardinals (4-2) put the game away in the third period with a touchdown pass from Carney to James Wallace to make it 21-0.

The Polar Bears (0-5) made it 21-6 in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Leclerc to Brian Durant. Bowdoin scored again after a 70-yard drive but a two-point conversion failed.

Wesley College 51, Husson College 0

BANGOR- A 95-yard punt return by Curtis Gore in the third quarter helped steer Wesley College to a 51-0 shutout over Husson College in football action Saturday afternoon.

Freshman tailback Omar Muhammad had over 100 rushing yards in the first quarter and would finish with 163 yards and two touchdwons. Wesley racked up a total of 344 rushing yards against the young Husson defense.
