FARMINGTON – If you’re looking to buy food locally made or grown, check out the newest edition of “Local Food” directory.

It lists 50 different locations in about a 30-mile radius of Farmington that offer a variety of food products.

Local bread, butter, cheese, eggs, fruit and berries, meat, milk and vegetables are available at a number of farms, stores, bakeries and orchards.

From home-baked bread at Black Cat Products in Chesterville and Grateful Bread Bakery in Kingfield to meat at The Turkey Farm in New Sharon and to River Run Farm in Strong, there are plenty of places in between and beyond to shop for local products.

The 16-page booklet has a map inside the back page with corresponding numbers to the local vendors listed.

This 2003-2004 directory is made possible by Local Food, a group of Franklin County local food producers and supporters.

It’s dedicated to the late Mabel Dennison of Temple, who put together the first Local Food directory in 2000 by driving around, stopping and talking with local farmers, according to the guide.

“An incredible helper of individuals, she was dedicated to the fight against corporate power,” it states on the first page. “Her lifelong work for a better world has inspired the continuation of this directory and the formation of the group Local Food.”

According to press release, “Local Food believes that support of area producers is the key to good health, continuation of a rural way of life, and a strong and vibrant economy.”

The group is funded by grants and donations. This year’s directory was made possible primarily by individual donations, it states.

The directory can be found at some farms, farmers’ markets and stands, stores and food pantries, as well as at Franklin County Cooperative Extension and Western Mountain Alliance.
