A close family friend lost their daughter to a courageous battle with cancer. Her obituary was listed in your newspaper.

It was a very heartwarming and touching obituary that really showed what a wonderful person she was. In talking with her parents today, to comments on such a wonderful tribute to their daughter, imagine my shock and dismay when they said that they were charged several hundred dollars for this to be listed in the paper.

I assumed that this must have been in error and called your newspaper. I was told that this charge for listing an obituary has been in place for over a year.

I have been a resident of Lewiston all my life and a subscriber to your paper. It was total shock to realize that the newspaper would charge for such a service.

This is a time when people need the support and comfort of friends and relatives, and by showing an obituary in the newspaper this lets everyone know of your loss. To think that you have to pay for such a services is outrageous. What poor taste on your part to try in make money from people, at this time of such sorrow.

Maybe you would be better to raise the cost of the paper to make up for this, and not charge for an obituary. Do you charge to list births, marriages, engagements, business news, crimes and many other news related articles?
