I am writing this letter to alert all Mainers who are concerned about the quality of the air we breathe, the condition of the environment our children will inherit, and the future of America as an increasingly energy-independent nation about the energy bill being presented to Congress.

Whether Democrat, Independent, Green or Republican, each one of us stands to lose if this bill passes – except for wealthy oil company executives, of which there are few among us.

In the pretense of developing new sources of energy (read “Giving money to the oil industry”), the bill removes environmental safeguards that have protected vulnerable fishing grounds even as it ignores the only responsible “new” energy sources, the alternatives of solar and wind power.

Another glaring omission is its lack of any provision for upgrading the power grid, whose cascading failure last August plunged much of the Northeast into darkness.

Our senators have proven their courage and independence; they need to know we support them in their opposition to this flawed and menacing legislation.
