INDIANAPOLIS – Rookie T.J. Ford had 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in his NBA debut to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 93-79 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.
Ford, who sat out the season opener against Minnesota with a sore right ankle, just missed becoming the second NBA player to record a triple-double in his first game, according to Elias Sports Bureau. In 1960, Oscar Robertson had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Michael Redd added 21 points and Tim Thomas scored 20 for the Bucks, who gave new coach Terry Porter his first win.
Al Harrington led the Pacers with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
Ford, the former Texas star and eighth overall pick in this year’s draft, controlled the game with a lightning-quick first step and crossover dribble that allowed him to penetrate the Indiana defense and get easy buckets for his teammates.
Pistons 93, Heat 81
MIAMI – Chauncey Billups scored 27 points and the Detroit Pistons won for the first time under new coach Larry Brown, beating the winless Miami Heat 93-81 on Friday night.
The Heat fell to 0-3, losing their home opener under new coach Stan Van Gundy. They are alone in last place in the Atlantic Division.
Billups, who shot 3-for-17 in the Pistons’ season-opening loss Wednesday, went 6-for-13 and hit three 3-pointers. Richard Hamilton added 24 points, including Detroit’s final 10 after the Heat closed to 83-76.
Raptors 82, Wizards 79
TORONTO – Vince Carter scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half as the Toronto Raptors recovered from their lowest scoring first half in franchise history and beat the Washington Wizards 82-79 Friday night.
Jerome Williams added 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Antonio Davis had 15 rebounds as the Raptors improved to 2-0 under new coach Kevin O’Neill.
The Raptors scored a record-low 27 points in the first half, but Carter had 12 points in the third quarter and made all six of his free throw attempts in the final five minutes.
Nets 84, T-wolves 61
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Jason Kidd picked up his game after Kenyon Martin went down with an ugly ankle injury, and the New Jersey Nets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 84-61 Friday night.
Kidd recorded his 51st career triple double with 21 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. Richard Jefferson added 26 points in a home opener the Nets hope will be remembered more for holding Minnesota to a franchise low in points rather than Martin’s injury.
The Nets’ power forward and emotional leader fell awkwardly with 10:05 left in the third quarter when he landed on Latrell Sprewell’s foot after failing to block his shot.
Bulls 100, Hawks 94
CHICAGO – Eddy Curry scored 22 points, and Tyson Chandler had 13 with a career-high 22 rebounds as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Atlanta Hawks 100-94 Friday night.
Chandler was fouled after grabbing his final rebound and he made a free throw to give the Bulls a 88-87 lead with 3:25 left.
Jason Terry tied it at 90 by making a 3-pointer with 1:47 left, but Scottie Pippen took over for the Bulls. Pippen drove hard to the basket to give Chicago a 92-90 lead and then took a charge on the opposite end.
On the next Bulls’ possession, Curry dunked over Theo Ratliff to give the Bulls a 94-90 lead with 1:04 left.
Pippen had 12 points, and Jalen Rose scored 14.
Stephen Jackson had a breakaway dunk to give the Hawks a 56-54 lead with 7:08 left in the third quarter. The Hawks went on a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter, capped by Terry’s 3-pointer that gave Atlanta an 85-82 lead with 4:54 left.
Terry scored 24 points and Jackson had 17 for the Hawks.
Kendall Gill made a 3 to give the Bulls a 22-6 lead in the first quarter, their largest lead of the game. The Hawks missed their first 13 shots.
Terry cut the Bulls’ lead to 44-41 with 1:08 left in the first half on a pair of free throws. Dion Glover scored 10 points for the Hawks in the first half. Curry scored 10 points for the Bulls, and Chandler added six points with 15 rebounds.
Glover finished with 14 points.
Notes: The Bulls honored former general manager Jerry Krause at halftime. The Bulls hung a banner with his name next to Phil Jackson’s in the rafters. Krause was the general manager during the Bulls’ run of six championships in the 1990’s. … Chandler missed the first game of the season with a sore back.
