Steven Schoff allegedly sent a crime scene picture of the victim

to his family.

PORTLAND (AP) – Police are charging a convicted murderer with harassment for allegedly sending a picture of his victim to the man’s mother with a note that said, “Thinking of you.”

If found guilty, Steven Schoff could get another six months on top of the 28 years he is serving for killing Devin O’Brien in April 1996. Prosecutors say that Schoff shot O’Brien, who was 20, in a Lyman gravel pit and then stuffed his body in a car trunk.

A police crime scene photograph of O’Brien’s body in the trunk ended up in a card mailed in July 2001 to Debbie and Jay O’Brien of Kennebunk, the victim’s parents. The card, which arrived days before what would have been their son’s 25th birthday, also said, “Happy birthday.”

Knox County District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau have charged 32-year-old Schoff and an alleged accomplice, Michael Willings, with harassment, a misdemeanor that could bring up to six months behind bars.

Rushlau said he will seek a maximum sentence and ask that it be tacked on to the end of Schoff’s murder sentence.

Debbie O’Brien described the episode as “sick.”

“How much more can you take?” O’Brien said. “I love my son. I miss him every day, and I’m going to do whatever I have to do to make his killer accountable.”

The O’Brien family sued Schoff in civil court in 2000, and later received a $210,000 wrongful death judgment. There is little chance the money will be collected because Schoff has no income.

In 2001, the O’Briens pressed the York County district attorney’s office to prosecute Schoff for receiving hacksaw blades from a visitor when he was in jail. He pleaded guilty to attempted criminal mischief and was sentenced to an additional six months.

The photograph of Devin O’Brien, mailed with a Maine State Prison stamp, was delivered to the O’Briens the same year.
