PRESQUE ISLE (AP) – Three people were killed and two more injured in a one-car accident over the weekend, police said.

The car crashed and burst into flames early Saturday on the Cleaves Road near the Presque Isle-Easton line. The dead were burned beyond recognition and their names were being withheld pending positive identification by the state medical examiner’s office, said Police Chief Naldo Gagnon.

Gagnon identified the survivors as Travis Bryant, 21 or 22, a student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Andrew Ladner, 21, of Presque Isle, a university employee.

Ladner, who suffered head injuries, was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Gagnon said. Bryant was at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.

State troopers who assisted in an accident reconstruction said the car went off the road and then burst into flames, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Public Safety Department.

The three bodies were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where autopsies were planned Monday.

Dental records would be used to assist in the identifications, Gagnon said.
