CHICAGO (AP) – Watch and learn, youngsters. The old guys still have some moves.
Chris Chandler passed for more than 200 yards for the first time in two seasons, and Anthony Thomas rushed for two scores to lead the Chicago Bears to a 20-7 victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
But Doug Flutie sure made things interesting. Just 10 days past his 41st birthday, Flutie nearly pulled off another comeback after replacing Drew Brees in the fourth quarter. He found Tim Dwight on a 22-yard pass, and rushed for another 17 yards to set up LaDainian Tomlinson’s 3-yard score that pulled San Diego within 13-7 with 9:13 to play.
San Diego’s defense got Flutie the ball back with plenty of time left. But Bears cornerback Charles Tillman downed the punt at the 1, and Flutie couldn’t get the Chargers beyond the 17-yard line.
Thomas then sealed the Bears’ victory with his own six-play, 21-yard drive, capping it with a 1-yard scoring run.
Thomas, who missed the last two games with a sore foot, finished with 111 yards rushing. Chandler was 21-of-30 for 224 yards. It was the 38-year-old’s first 200-yard game since he threw for 423 yards on Dec. 23, 2001.
when he was with Atlanta.
Flutie was 8-of-11 for 70 yards. He also rushed for 19 yards, including a 17-yard scamper that was San Diego’s longest of the day.
Tomlinson rushed for 61 yards. Brees was just 7-of-15 for 49 yards with one interception.
The loss was the latest blow for the Chargers (1-7), who haven’t played at home since Sept. 21 and have been on an odyssey worthy of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” They were supposed to host Miami on Monday night, but the wildfires that have ravaged Southern California forced the game to be moved to Arizona.
Concerns over poor air quality also convinced the Chargers to abandon their practice facility this week. They flew to Champaign, Ill., late Wednesday night and practiced at the University of Illinois for two days before coming to Chicago on Saturday.
But the extra time in Illinois didn’t make the Chargers feel any more comfortable. The Bears (3-5) jumped to a 13-0 lead, though how much of that was to their credit and how much was to San Diego’s ineptitude is debatable.
The Chargers looked downright awful through the first three quarters, managing just four first downs and 85 yards. They went five straight series without a first down, and they missed a field goal on their only scoring opportunity of the first half.
But then Flutie came in, and the Chargers started crackling. After connecting with David Boston for a 7-yard gain, he handed off to Tomlinson, who scampered 14 yards.
One play later, Flutie found Dwight for a 22-yard gain to the Bears 31. Dwight got some help from Jerry Azumah, who missed a tackle around the Chicago 40.
Flutie didn’t have anyone open on the next play, so he tucked the ball and ran for 17 yards. Not bad for an old guy.
Tomlinson ran twice, including a 3-yard waltz into the end zone to make it 13-7.
