The mother of a Lewiston native killed in Iraq plans to set up a scholarship fund in her son’s name.
Nancy Cunningham, mother of U.S. Army Spc. Daniel Francis Cunningham Jr., said she will establish a college scholarship for students at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, her son’s beloved alma mater.
“He loved it there,” she said. “He thought it was a very friendly place to be.”
Daniel Cunningham, 33, was killed in Iraq on April 4 when his vehicle fell into a ravine. He left behind his wife, Heather, and a son, Connor, who live in Revere, Mass. His mother and brothers live in Lewiston.
Nancy Cunningham said a scholarship fund felt like the perfect way to honor his memory.
“He served his country and I just think it’s the right thing to do,” she said.
Daniel Cunningham and his wife were high school sweethearts at Oxford Hills. He graduated from the school in the late 1980s.
Daniel’s mother said he loved his time at the high school. She believes he would have loved giving a scholarship to a fellow Oxford Hills graduate.
Nancy Cunningham is currently working with the school system to set up the scholarship fund. She is accepting donations sent to 727 Sabattus St., Apt. 6, Lewiston, ME 04240.
No decisions have been made about the scholarship’s eligibility requirements or the amount to be given.
