WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – Boston Red Sox team doctor William Morgan was arrested on drunk-driving charges after his car was spotted swerving on a highway and a near-empty glass of wine was found in the front seat, state police said.

Morgan, 50, of Boylston was “unsteady on his feet” and failed four field sobriety tests when he was arrested Sunday night, according to state police spokesman Lt. Paul Maloney.

Morgan was released on personal recognizance Sunday night and was arraigned Monday in Worcester District Court on charges including operating under the influence and drinking alcohol from an open container in a motor vehicle. Morgan did not immediately return a message left at his Boylston home Tuesday morning requesting comment.

Morgan, a nationally known hand surgeon, is head of orthopedic surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. Calls to the hospital were referred to spokesman Steve Danehy, who said he had no immediate comment.

Sox spokesman Kevin Shea said that team officials were aware of the arrest, but said the team was focused on its search for a manager and had no comment. State police said Morgan was stopped after several cell phone calls reported a car driving erratically on Route 290 in Worcester, Maloney said.

State police trooper Stephen Marsh located Morgan, and reported his car was weaving.

Police found a glass in the front passenger seat that was still cold to the touch and contained a small amount of liquid that smelled of alcohol, Maloney said. Morgan also had a light red stain on a yellow sweater he was wearing, he said. An unopened bottle of wine was in the front seat of his Mercedes Benz and several unopened bottles were in the trunk.

Morgan was cooperative, Maloney said.
