The Growth Council is buying the C.B.Cummings & Sons mill in Norway for $100,000.

NORWAY – The public will have two opportunities to tour the buildings and grounds of the former C.B. Cummings and Sons dowel mill in downtown Norway. A Friday tour at 4 p.m. will be led by two officials of the Growth Council of Oxford Hills: Brett Doney, chief executive officer, and Marcy Boughter, development manager of the Growth Council’s real estate arm, Western Maine Development.

The Growth Council is buying the 150-year-old mill property for $100,000 and is hoping for $400,000 in grant money to prepare the property for redevelopment. The grant money would pay to tear down some of the older buildings and create a shared parking area, among other things.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, Norway Downtown Revitalization President Ken Morse will be joined by Norway Selectman George Tibbetts, a longtime worker at the mill, which closed a year ago due to foreign competition.

Those interested in the mill’s redevelopment want to come up with a master plan by Jan. 15 mapping out desired uses of the property.

Among proposals that have been mentioned are incubator businesses, elderly housing, a footbridge to Main Street across Pennesseewassee Stream, a woodworking museum, a cultural arts space and a restaurant overlooking the stream. For more information on either tour, contact the growth council at 743-2425.
