RUMFORD – The Rumford Area Quilters will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the United Methodist Church on Linnell Street. It is asked that people bring needles, thread and scissors for work on the nine patches. All area quilters are welcome to attend.

Help for veterans

RUMFORD – The Veterans’ Service Officer will continue to visit the area each month on the second and fourth Thursday, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Career Center on Congress Street.

This service is available to help Maine veterans, their dependents, and survivors to apply for both state and Veterans Administration benefits including health care for eligible veterans.

Visits will not occur on state and federal holidays.

Reunion planning

MEXICO – The 1949 Class of Mexico High School will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Mexico Chicken Coop. All interested classmates for a 55th 2004 class reunion are asked to attend. For more information call committee members Cora at 364-4835 or Irene at 562-4604.

FARMINGTON – The next Tumbledown Conservation Alliance meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at UMF in room 207, Ricker Addition. Included on the agenda is TCA’s new brochure.

Geologist to speak

BETHEL – The Mahoosuc Land Trust begins its local knowledge series on Wednesday, Nov. 12, with a presentation by Jerry Vincent. A geologist, Vincent will speak about the geology of western Maine.

He will speak at 7 p.m. in the Trustees Auditorium of McLaughlin Science Center on the Gould Academy campus. The free program is open to nonmembers and is handicapped accessible. For more information, people can contact the Land Trust office at 824-3806.

Other speakers in the series will include Bernd Heinrich, a wildlife biologist and author, and Jennifer Loomis, a wildlife photographer and author. The Chewonki Foundation will present a program on raptors of Maine.

Skiing plans

RUMFORD – Black Mountain will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, for everyone interested in being an instructor for programs at the mountain. This will be an opportunity to be part of an effort to create a series of classes, groups and teams of all ages that will bring skiing to a lot of new participants and to make it part of the winter life of River Valley families, organizers said. BETHEL – The final 2003 lecture on Maine Transportation History sponsored by the Bethel Historical Society will be Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Dr. Moses Mason House meeting room, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Society Director Stanley R. Howe will discuss the history of aviation in the Bethel area from the 1920s to the dedication of the Bethel Regional Airport: Colonel Dyke Field this year. The lecture is free and everyone is welcome.

A caregiver’s treat

RUMFORD – Donna Courchesney, a caregiver specialist, and Misty Simoneau, an elder services consultant from SeniorsPlus, are offering a morning of fun for caregivers. The definition of a caregiver is anyone who takes care of someone who needs some type of caring.

The women said, “We would like to give you a break, to sit and enjoy making a lovely photo album of special memories to either keep or give as a gift. All you need is the time and bring 15-20 of your favorite photos.”

There will be no cost. People are being asked to call if they plan to attend so there will be enough material for everyone. This will take be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at SeniorsPlus, 50 Congress St. For reservations, people can call Kim at 364-3572.

Hearing in Canton

CANTON – A public hearing will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the municipal building to discuss plans for a new fire station.

Honoring veterans

RUMFORD – Veteran’s Appreciation Night will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Rumford Lodge of Elks 862. It will begin with a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m., which will include a light lunch. “The USO Show,” being put on by the Farmington Elks, will follow at 7 p.m. Free tickets are available for veterans and their guests. The tickets may be picked up at the Rumford Lodge or veterans can contact George Wyman, veterans’ chairman, at 645-5352.
