I read with interest the article on ATVs. It seems, however, that the Sun Journal overlooked the real scourge of the countryside – dirt bikes. They spew dirt, dust and fumes into the air while emitting a loud, high-pitched whine as they rip up roads, paths and lawns. The riders lack responsibility – as do the parents who allow them to ride the bikes in the first place.

The family down the street has turned a couple of acres of rolling meadow into a dirt bike track for their only child – what an absolute waste.

I consider that as symptomatic of a significant problem in Maine – the lack of, or the misguided, aspirations that many Maine parents have for their children. Unless something changes, Maine will continue to struggle with mediocrity, dust and noise. That’s not the way life should be.
