1912 – 2003

LEWISTON – Fernand C. Lagasse, 91, formerly of 157 Central Ave., Lewiston, died Friday, Nov. 7, at the Montello Manor Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past two and a half years.

Born in Lewiston on March 31, 1912, he was the son of Camille W. and Anna Laplante Lagasse. Educated locally, he attended Frye and Jordan schools, and was a graduate of Bliss College.

On Aug. 18, 1934, he was married to the former Alma Lebel, who passed away in 1977, and he later married the former Carmen Garneau Bernier, who passed away on Dec. 30, 2002.

He worked for the Maine State Unemployment Commission for many years, retiring in 1973, and also prepared tax returns for local residents.

A member of Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, he worked as a fundraiser for the church’s construction, and, late in life, also raised funds for its renovation. He was one of the founders of Community Credit Union, served for decades as secretary and treasurer of the local chapter of La Société des Artisans, was a member of the St. Dominic Association, the Holy Name Society, volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital for over 20 years, and was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Richelieu Club.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph “Bert” Lagasse and wife Carmelle of Lewiston, Raymond Lagasse and wife Rosemarie of Lewiston; two daughters, Fernande Theberge of Lewiston, and Claire and husband Tom Rogers of Webster, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
