The Black Bears smash the modern-era school record for points in a game in a 77-24 rout.
BALTIMORE – Freshman quarterback Ron Whitcomb completed 13-of-21 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns as Maine beat Morgan State 77-24 on Saturday.
Maine shattered the modern-era school record for points in a game. The previous mark was 62, set three times against Bates in 1952, Springfield in 1983 and Boston University in 1997.
It was the second-largest point total of all-time for the Black Bears, who rolled up 97 points against Fort Williams in 1927.
Whitcomb threw all his touchdown passes in the first quarter as the Black Bears (6-4) took a 28-0 lead.
Whitcomb connected with Christian Pereira, who finished with five receptions for 124 yards, on passes of 65 and 31 yards, and threw Ryan Waller a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Marcus Williams had 21 carries for 246 yards and four touchdowns on runs of 1, 12, 13 and 21 yards for Maine. And Kevin McMahan had four catches for 117 yards.
Morgan State (5-5) was led by Brad Littlejohn, who completed 15 of 30 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 12 carries for 109 yards.
The Bears got on the board with 10:57 left in the second quarter on Jon Voroshilin’s 39-yard field goal.
Maine was up 49-24 by halftime, with Arel Gordon scoring on a kickoff return a few minutes before the break.
The Bears didn’t score in the second half, while Black Bear rushers ran for four touchdowns.
Maine had 685 yards of total offense, while Morgan State was held to 397.
