One local business is growing and another is heading to Mexico.

RUMFORD – One Congress Street business is expanding; another is leaving for expansion in Mexico.

Steve Avery, owner of Lennox Capital LLC in Concord, N.H., and of Western Maine Brokerage Services LLC of 19 Congress St., bought the former Wardwell lot on the corner of Congress and Exchange streets. He is also negotiating for the purchase of the nearby former Gaccetta Shoe Store. Meanwhile, at 132 Congress St., the Subway sandwich shop is moving to a new mini-mall in Mexico.

Avery’s business will move from 19 Congress St. to the former shoe store if negotiations are successful with shoe store owner Vito Gaccetta. The 75 Congress St. store has been vacant for about two years.

Janet Rowley, senior account executive and spokeswoman for Avery, said the brokerage business has grown and needs more space. The Wardwell lot will remain vacant and be used for parking, at least for now. Avery received a driveway permit from selectmen last month to access the lot.

If all goes as planned, the brokerage company may move into its new offices soon after the first of the year.

“I see a lot of potential in the Rumford area,” said Avery.

The owner of the Rumford Subway, Marvin Mayberry, could not be reached for comment. However, employees at the shop and Mexico Town Manager Joseph Derouche said the Rumford franchise will move to a new mini-mall on Main Street, Mexico, sometime after the first of the year.

Construction of the three-unit mini-mall has been in the works for several months.

Derouche said about a dozen more employees will be needed at the new site.

What will happen at the Subway site here is unknown at this time. The building’s owner, a retired dentist, could not be reached for comment.
