NORWAY – Police say a Poland man was a bit too quick to get somewhere Sunday.

Cecil L. Atter, 20, allegedly sped by Officer James Ventresca at 4 p.m., who was heading into town on Lake Road. Seeing there was no front license plate on the car, Ventresca turned his cruiser around and began a pursuit.

He followed the vehicle to Greenwood Road.

The car pulled over, but after Ventresca got out of his cruiser, it sped away again.

Onto Don Hunt Road went the pursuit. Then, says Ventresca, the vehicle went through the stop sign while turning onto Morse Road.

Next, said Ventresca, the car sent several people parked on the side of Morse Road scurrying for cover as it approached.

Then it turned onto Wiley Road.

Ventresca said he lost sight of the car in the dust that was kicked up on the gravel road. “I continued to follow the dust cloud, which became heavier,” he said.

“As I rounded a curve, I saw the car airborne and then land on all four tires in the trees,” he said.

Ventresca called for an ambulance and help from the fire department.

He said the driver refused to follow his directions to come out of the vehicle at first, acquiescing only after the officer showed him his gun.

“He was moving around and I ordered him to show me his hands, but he did not,” Ventresca said. “I drew my weapon and ordered him to sit up and show me his hands.

“He raised his hands,” Ventresca said.

The suspect complained about a sore back. Atter was treated at Stephens Memorial Hospital and then released.

Atter was booked at the Oxford County Jail for attempting to elude an officer, a Class C crime, and operating after suspension, operating under the influence, criminal speed and illegal attachment of plates, all either Class D or E crimes.

He remains at the jail after failing to post $350 for cash bail.
