We are writing in response to the recent letters regarding schools’ roles in educating students about respect for homosexuality. The multicultural curriculum implemented by the teachers on Team 73 at Lewiston Middle School strives to encourage tolerance of cultural, racial and religious diversity. We believe that schools cannot back down from their stand that multicultural education is a necessity in today’s schools every time a parent complains. If they do, then schools will continue to perpetuate the stereotypes of the previous generation, and we will never become a society of constructive and respectful citizens.

The Team 73 curriculum was developed to teach respect by educating students to accept and learn from others’ differences and to provide these students with an environment in which they can develop their own perspective on issues.

Students, such as Danielle Taylor, have the right to voice their opinion about homosexuality. We agree that respect is not synonymous with acceptance. However, Miss Taylor states that she respects gay people while simultaneously describing homosexuality as “gross.” This aspect of Miss Taylor’s comment deviates from the principles that the Team 73 teachers are trying to instill in their students through this curriculum.

Respect is essential in today’s society, and we admire the Team 73 teachers for taking the initiative to tackle such a controversial and imperative issue.
