1918 – 2003

NEWRY – Romeo A. Baker, 85, who lived a full life with a passion, died Tuesday on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, peacefully at his home in Newry, with family by his side.

He was born in Gorham, N.H., May 11, 1918, a son of Camille and Florida (Provencher) Baker, and had served as a Major in the U. S. Air Force flying B-24’s during World War II.

He was a Funeral Director for over 27 years in Plainfield, N.J., prior to moving to Newry, in 1969. He organized and was a charter member of the Bethel Rotary Club and served as its first president.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and skier where he served as a ski instructor at Sunday River. He was a superior woodworker and was a noted local artist.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jo Baker of Newry; eight children, Margaret Guinan and husband Harry, Linda Meyer and husband David, Carol Reilly and husband Douglas, Randall Baker, Jane Derleth and husband Bob, Julie Keaveney and husband Frank, Nancy Martin and husband Steve, and Gary Stevens; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Pete Baker; three sisters, Dora Gardner, Margaret Buck, and Yvonne Nowlin
