An official said very few compaints about the closures were received.
The U.S. Postal Service has reversed its decision to close four Maine post offices during lunch hours.
Effective Monday, Nov. 17, the post offices in Harrison, Mechanic Falls, Rumford and Northeast Harbor will return to their pre-August 2003 hours of operation, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced Wednesday.
“The opinions of Mainers who utilize the postal services in these communities were strong and unified, and I applaud every Mainer who voiced their concerns over the proposed change,” Snowe said in a prepared statement.
Elizabeth Johnson, postal service district manager for Maine, said Wednesday that U.S. Sen. Susan Collins asked the service to review the closures.
“We took a look at it and recognized that we could put these hours back,” she said.
Johnson said the postal service had received very few complaints about the closures.
Beginning Monday there will be no lunch closure in Mechanic Falls, Rumford or Northeast Harbor. The Harrison Post Office will close from 1 to 2 p.m. instead of from noon to 2.
