MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Jacki Massara punched in the winning goal with five minutes left in the second overtime period as defending national champion Rowan University picked up a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in an NCAA Field Hockey Regional in Middlebury.

The Huskies, who had a 10-game winning streak stopped, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes as senior Renne Heath’s shot was tipped past the Profs keeper by Kerry Leonard at the 8:10 mark.

Rowan finally found a way to score on the Huskies’ Jessie Superchi with 10:07 to play in regulation with a goal following a corner.

Michelle Thornton’s shot from outside was saved by Superchi, but the rebound came to Beth Raleigh who found the back of the net to send the game into overtime.

Massara’s game-winner came with five minutes remainng in the second overtime period. Thornton sent the ball in, where it was tipped by Peterson before Massara finished the playoff.

The tip by Peterson left an empty net as Superchi had to come out to save the tip attempt, setting the stage for the winning shot.

Women’s hockey

UNE 2, USM 1

HENNIKER, N.H. – Freshman goalie Jackie Parker stopped 38 of 39 shots, including 15 in the final period, to preserve New England College’s 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in women’s ice hockey Saturday.

Freshman Ashley Watkins scored both goals for the Pilgrims (2-1-1), one in each of the first two periods.

She netted an unassisted goal in the first period and converted a relay from Ashley Koltenback in the second period.

Parker kept the Huskies (2-1-1) off the scoreboard until junior Rachael Wollstadt took a relay from freshman Kerry Brennan and Jennifer Cordone and nailed the puck home to cut the lead in half at the 5:21 mark of the third period.

The Huskies continued to apply pressure, but could not nail down the equalizer before the buzzer. Senior goalie Karen Jamnik made 32 saves in net for the Huskies.
