DIXFIELD – The Maine Department of Transportation plans to take the next step in straightening another section of Route 2.

A public informational meeting on the proposed reconstruction of 1.85 miles of Route 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at T.W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School.

MDOT Project Manager Heath Cowan said work will begin where the most recent project left off. It will run from a point 0.55 miles north of the intersection with Canton Point Road 1.85 miles north. The highway project is estimated to cost about $3.2 million.

Construction may start in the fall of 2005.

The ongoing project, a two-mile stretch of the highway construction extending from the foot of Morrison Hill to the intersection of Holman Road with Route 2, has wrapped up work for the season. About six weeks of work remains in the spring when it will receive a fourth coat of paving, the shoulders will be paved, and the road receive side and middle striping.

Once the second leg of the highway reconstruction is complete, sometime in 2006 or 2007, a third section is planned for reconstruction. These improvements will include modification of a sharp curve near Canton Point Road, then extend to the edge of Dixfield village.

Wednesday’s meeting will give residents a chance to ask questions and make comments on the 2005 project.

A copy of the proposed plan is on display at the Dixfield Town Office.

Cowan and project designer Steve Bodge will be present at Wednesday’s hearing.
