WILTON – Police and an animal control officer are trying to find a dog that bit a woman Saturday. The dog, described as a German shepherd cross, was on a leash and walking on Main Street with its owner at about 3:50 p.m.

If the dog isn’t found, Andrea Duguay, 21, of Wilton is expected to undergo a series of rabies shots.

Duguay was walking down the road to go to work at Mario’s when she passed a woman and a dog near Sassy Scissors, Animal Control Officer Wayne Atwood said.

The woman was walking toward the Post Office.

The woman was described as about 5-foot, 8-inches tall and wearing a winter hat. She had what looked like graying hair sticking out from under it, Atwood said. She also wore glasses.

Duguay had seen the woman in town a couple of times during the week before she was bitten.

Duguay said she thought the dog was a shepherd/chow mix. Its ears stood straight up, she said. It was black and brown colored.

The dog bit Duguay on the left thigh, Atwood said.

“I kind of stopped quick because I saw the rip in my pants,” Duguay said.

The woman asked if her dog did that, and Duguay said “yes.”

“She said ‘My dog has never done that before,'” Duguay said.

The woman told her the dog had a hard time seeing and might have been startled when they walked by each other, Duguay said. The woman also told her the dog was up to date on its shots.

The dog looked like it was going to nip her again, Duguay said, so she continued on to work.

“I was in shock,” Duguay said. “I hadn’t realized how bad it was. I was cleaning it at work and I noticed it was worse than I thought.”

Her thigh “was bleeding and cut open,” she said.

Now it is a nickel-size scab with a big bruise and a couple of inches away there are teeth marks.

Police officer Ed Leahy and Atwood recommended Duguay go to the doctor. She did.

“My doctor told me today if I didn’t find the dog, I’ll have to start getting rabies shots,” Duguay said.

With no insurance and the pain associated with the shots, Duguay said she is hoping someone will recognize the dog and woman.

Atwood said he has checked in town and veterinarians and nobody recognizes the dog. Leahy has also been checking.

Wilton police Chief James Parker is encouraging the woman to come forward. He’s also asked that anyone who saw the incident or who recognizes the woman and dog to call the department or Atwood through the Sheriff’s Department at 778-4222.
