AUBURN – A Turner woman was killed and several other people were injured early Tuesday when a car and van collided on Route 4.
Police said 23-year-old Tana Norris died after her car drifted into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a van at about 12:45 a.m.
The crash caused Norris’ car to flip in the roadway. The van careened onto a nearby lawn.
Five people in the van were taken to Lewiston hospitals with injuries. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Investigators said the driver of the van, 42-year-old Jose Flores of Boston, suffered a broken leg in the crash. He remained in stable condition at Central Maine Medical Center Tuesday night. Passengers in the van suffered lesser injuries.
What caused Norris’ car to drift over the center line had not been determined by Tuesday night. Police said alcohol or speed did not appear to be factors in the crash.
Norris was driving northbound, toward Turner, when her car collided with the van traveling in the opposite direction, police said.
The crash occurred just north of the Route 4 causeway. Police said Flores was driving a Ford van owned by Decoster Egg Farms of Turner.
Norris, driving a Chevrolet Beretta, died of head and internal injuries suffered in the crash, police said.
When police and rescue crews arrived at the scene, they found several injured people from the van who could not speak English.
Police called for a Spanish-speaking translator as they began to investigate the wreck. Maine State Police responded to assist with the crash reconstruction.
The wreck remained under investigation by Auburn police Tuesday night.
Norris leaves two children; neither was with her at the time of the crash.
