Maine has received a $1.9 million grant from the federal government to train teachers and to look at the effects of computer-trained teachers on the classroom.

Maine was one of only nine states to get the grant.

The money will be used to train junior high school math teachers and prepare them to use technology in the classroom. Training will include a mix of workshops, peer coaching and online support.

The money will also be used to study the effects of technologically enhanced teacher training and on student achievement. The results will be shared with schools throughout the country.

Between 30 and 60 schools will be selected to participate in the project. State officials hope to choose schools this spring.

The $1.9 million grant will be distributed over three years.

Maine is the first state to give seventh- and eighth-grade students and teachers each a laptop computer. The laptop program is in its second year.
