PARIS – Two alternative methods for smoking cessation in the tri-county area are hypnosis and acupuncture.

John P. Davis, certified clinical hypnotherapist, said he has had a successful smoking cessation rate because hypnosis provides a direct line to the subconscious.

“The subconscious is responsible for habits, which are patterns of behavior,” Davis said. “We want to get in there and change those habits.”

He said the client will agree on what suggestions to use and then meet once a week for three weeks to reinforce the cessation suggestion.

“If it’s their suggestion, I know they will accept it more,” Davis said. “I teach them how to hypnotize themselves. After three weeks they can hypnotize themselves to reinforce the suggestion.”

Davis, who has been practicing hypnosis since June, said he received his doctorate in holistic health and healing in December from the New England School of Hypnotherapy in Northport.

He has offices in Paris and Brunswick and may be reached at either office by calling 207-753-0157.

Diane Peseckis of the Acupuncture Center of Western Maine been practicing acupuncture for three years. She said acupuncture combined with diet and exercise is an effective way of helping on to stop smoking.

Peseckis said Chinese medicine is designed to put body back in balance. A smoker’s body is out of balance, she said.

“People who smoke have too much heat in their body,” Peseckis said. “It’s hot inhaling it. They have to detoxify and get rid of heat. I try to put back in balance.

“There are 365 basic acupuncture points on body and each has a specific purpose,” she said. “I use those points to help with cessation.”

She said treatments are individualized to the person, and it is important that the person wants to stop, rather than being pressured to stop.

Peseckis has offices in Paris at the Hope House, 743-2642, and Auburn at Great Falls Plaza, 783-2016.
