1927 – 2003

FARMINGTON – Everett L. “Amos” Caton, 76, of Farmington, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 19, at the Sandy River Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation, where he had been a resident for nearly two years.

Born in Bath, Jan. 3, 1927, his parents were Raymond Sampson and Lillian (Caton) Sampson. He received his education in Phillips schools and attended UMO.

From 1944-1947, he served in the U.S. Navy as a fire control man third class. For a number of years he was employed at Farmington Shoe and retired after 16 years of service from the University of Maine, Farmington, where he was employed in the maintenance/custodial dept.

On Sept. 6, 1949, he married Ruth Ellicott in Lewiston. Proud of his military service to his country, he was a past commander of the Prescott/Fairbanks American Legion Post #64, Phillips and was a member of the B.P.O.E. #2430 of Farmington.

His hobbies included studying Civil War and Narrow Gage Railroad history. Prior to his illness, he was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and playing cribbage. He will be remembered for his anecdotes and wonderful storytelling abilities.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Farmington; one son, Craig Caton and his wife, Barbara of North Grafton, Mass.; one daughter, Karen Locke and her husband, James of Chesterville; one step-brother, Virgil Sampson of Steep Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
