FARMINGTON – Five Bowdoin players, including one from the bench, registered double digits to slam the door shut on Thomas College, 114-64, in men’s basketball during the Hight Chevrolet Tournament Friday evening.

Corey Gildart came off the bench for the Polar Bears (1-0) to shoot 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. Gildart also hit both of his free-throw attempts for a perfect outing.

Kyle Petrie led the Polar Bears with 18 points, while T.J. McLeoad and Jon Farmer tallied 17 and 16 points respectively.

The Terriers (0-1) had little balance amongst their starters as Adam Rich and Dan Grappi scored two-thirds of their team total with 21 points apiece.

UMF 81, UMPI 62

FARMINGTON – Travis Magnusson dumped in 24 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to an 81-62 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in men’s basketball during the Hight Chevrolet Tournament Friday evening.

Steve Ginn contributed 14 points for the Beavers (1-0). Luke Neilson had a double-double with 11 points and a game-leading 10 rebounds in the win.

Jon Codey led the Owls (0-1) with 13 points and hauled down nine rebounds, while teammate Fabien Lennox tallied 12 points.

UMF will face off with Bowdoin in the championship game Saturday. UMPI will take on Thomas College in the consolation game.

WNEC 84, Colby 76

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior center Dyshawn Thames and junior forward Anthony Charbatji scored 18 points apiece to lead Western New England College to an 84-76 win over Colby College in the first round of the Nancy K. Sulinski ’76 Memorial Basketball Tournament at Geissler Gymnasium Friday.

The Golden Bears (1-0) trailed by nine points three times in the second half before going on an 8-1 sprint with 7:09 left in the game to take the lead once and for all. Thames, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half, began and finished the run with field goals.

Sophomore Nate Dick had a game-leading 21 points for the Mules (0-1), while senior guard Nick Loukes scored 19 for Colby.

Women’s basketball

Husson 63, Newbury 59

WATERVILLE – First-year center Annie McIntosh had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, including three assists, to lead Husson College to a 63-59 victory over Newbury College in the opening game of the Colby College Tip-Off Tourney Friday evening at Wadsworth Gymnasium

Sarah Davis and Stephanie Noyes scored 12 points apiece for the Braves (1-0), while Holly Gracie chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.

Randi Hardiman led Newbury (0-1) with 14 points and seven rebounds and Victoria Anderson contributed 12 points as they battled back and closed the gap to within three points in the final minute of play.

Men’s ice hockey

Trinity 8, USM 0

GORHAM – Senior forward Steven LaBrie netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists to lead Trinity College to an 8-0 blistering over the University of Southern Maine in men’s hockey Friday night.

LaBrie set up the game-winner at 9:20 of the first period for the Bantams (1-0) when he fed freshman forward John Halverson, who slid around the Huskies net and tucked the puck inside the near post for a power-play goal.

Junior goalie Tim Claus and freshman Stuart Fricke combined to make 28 saves for the Huskies (0-1).

Women’s ice hockey

Quinnipiac 5, USM 0

NORTHFORD, Conn. – In a game of lopsided offense, Quinnipiac University shut out the University of Southern Maine 5-0 in women’s ice hockey Friday evening at the Northford Ice Pavilion.

Following a scoreless first period in which the Bobcats (4-8-0) outshot the Huskies (2-2-1) by a staggering 14-3, freshmen defender Trina Hulshof gave Quinnipiac the opening goal on a conversion from freshman Vicky Graham 1:39 into the second period.

The Bobcats went on to take 20 shots on goal in the second period to garner three scores, and 10 more in the final frame to seal the victory with a pair of goals. Karen Jamnik played well in goal for the Huskies, stopping 39 of the 44 shots.
