Jermaine Jackson led Maine with 12 points.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tim Pickett scored 18 points and Anthony Richardson added 16 as Florida State opened the season Friday with a 69-49 victory over the Maine Black Bears.

Richardson scored eight of his points in a late 17-4 surge, was capped by two 3-point baskets by Pickett, as the Seminoles wore down the visitors and opened a 68-46 lead with just over a minute left.

Jermaine Jackson was the lone Maine player in double figures with 12 points, but he made just 3 of 12 shots.

Both clubs shots poorly in a game interrupted in the first half for nearly 20 minutes by a malfunctioning 35-second clock. The teams played the last 5:56 of the half without a shot clock. It was restored for the second half.

Maine shot 32.7 percent and only 26.9 percent from 3-point range. Florida State hit 38.9 percent of his tries with Richardson shooting 6-for-9.

Maine did have a 38-37 advantage in rebounds, but committed 21 turnovers that led to 20 Florida State points.

Bowdoin 114, Thomas 64

FARMINGTON – Five Bowdoin players, including one from the bench, registered double digits to slam the door shut on Thomas College, 114-64, in men’s basketball during the Hight Chevrolet Tournament Friday evening.

Corey Gildart came off the bench for the Polar Bears (1-0) to shoot 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. Gildart also hit both of his free-throw attempts for a perfect outing.

Kyle Petrie led the Polar Bears with 18 points, while T.J. McLeoad and Jon Farmer tallied 17 and 16 points respectively.

The Terriers (0-1) had little balance amongst their starters as Adam Rich and Dan Grappi scored two-thirds of their team total with 21 points apiece.

UMF 81, UMPI 62

FARMINGTON – Travis Magnusson dumped in 24 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to an 81-62 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in men’s basketball during the Hight Chevrolet Tournament Friday evening.

Steve Ginn contributed 14 points for the Beavers (1-0). Luke Neilson had a double-double with 11 points and a game-leading 10 rebounds in the win.

Jon Codey led the Owls (0-1) with 13 points and hauled down nine rebounds, while teammate Fabien Lennox tallied 12 points.

UMF will face off with Bowdoin in the championship game Saturday. UMPI will take on Thomas College in the consolation game.

WNEC 84, Colby 76

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior center Dyshawn Thames and junior forward Anthony Charbatji scored 18 points apiece to lead Western New England College to an 84-76 win over Colby College in the first round of the Nancy K. Sulinski ’76 Memorial Basketball Tournament at Geissler Gymnasium Friday.

The Golden Bears (1-0) trailed by nine points three times in the second half before going on an 8-1 sprint with 7:09 left in the game to take the lead once and for all. Thames, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half, began and finished the run with field goals.

Sophomore Nate Dick had a game-leading 21 points for the Mules (0-1), while senior guard Nick Loukes scored 19 for Colby.

Women’s basketball

Husson 63, Newbury 59

WATERVILLE – First-year center Annie McIntosh had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, including three assists, to lead Husson College to a 63-59 victory over Newbury College in the opening game of the Colby College Tip-Off Tourney Friday evening at Wadsworth Gymnasium

Sarah Davis and Stephanie Noyes scored 12 points apiece for the Braves (1-0), while Holly Gracie chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.

Randi Hardiman led Newbury (0-1) with 14 points and seven rebounds and Victoria Anderson contributed 12 points as they battled back and closed the gap to within three points in the final minute of play.

Men’s hockey

Trinity 8, USM 0

GORHAM – Senior forward Steven LaBrie netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists to lead Trinity College to an 8-0 blistering over the University of Southern Maine in men’s hockey Friday night.

LaBrie set up the game-winner at 9:20 of the first period for the Bantams (1-0) when he fed freshman forward John Halverson, who slid around the Huskies net and tucked the puck inside the near post for a power-play goal.

Junior goalie Tim Claus and freshman Stuart Fricke combined to make 28 saves for the Huskies (0-1).

Colby 6, St. Anselm 2

WATERVILLE – Sophomore forward Kevin Lyons had a pair of goals as Colby exploded for five goals in the second period to blast St. Anselm for a 6-2 win in men’s hockey Friday night.

Nick Bayley added a goal and two assists for the Mules (1-0). Senior captain Evan Kearns picked up a goal along with Nick Meintel and Joel Morash for Colby.

Keegan Rosenberer and Aaron Crear provided the scoring for St. Anselm.

Bowdoin 9, NEC 6

BRUNSWICK – James Gadon, Jon Landry and Matt Roy scored a pair of goals apiece to power Bowdoin to a 9-6 win over New England College in men’s hockey Friday.

The Polar Bears (1-0) scored early when Nate Riddell faked a shot from the point and fed a wide open Gadon in front of the net.

The Pilgrims rallied back from a 3-1 deficit early in the second period to take a 4-3 lead into the third period.

Bowdoin evened the score a 3:38 when John Landry intercepted a pass and flicked the puck high into the net. The Polar Bears went on a four-goal tear over the next 10 minutes to guarantee victory.

Women’s hockey

Quinnipiac 5, USM 0

NORTHFORD, Conn. – In a game of lopsided offense, Quinnipiac University shut out the University of Southern Maine 5-0 in women’s ice hockey Friday evening at the Northford Ice Pavilion.

Following a scoreless first period in which the Bobcats (4-8-0) outshot the Huskies (2-2-1) by a staggering 14-3, freshmen defender Trina Hulshof gave Quinnipiac the opening goal on a conversion from freshman Vicky Graham 1:39 into the second period.

The Bobcats went on to take 20 shots on goal in the second period to garner three scores, and 10 more in the final frame to seal the victory with a pair of goals. Karen Jamnik played well in goal for the Huskies, stopping 39 of the 44 shots.

Bowdoin 1, Middlebury 0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Meghan Gillis backhanded a goal at the 13:14 mark of the second period to notch the only goal Bowdoin needed to grab a 1-0 win from Middlebury College in women’s ice hockey Friday.

The Panthers came out strong and controlled a majority of the play for the game’s first 10 minutes.

Gillis had two opportunities in the first period, but Panther goalie Kati Madouros made to big saves to keep the Polar Bears off the board early.

Madouros kept the contest to a one-goal margin with 15 saves, while Nathalie Morgan made 10 stops for Bowdoin.
