I must say, I am befuddled by the recent actions taken by the voters of this state.

On the one hand, we shoot down the win-win situation of a jobs provided by casino and hotel, while on the other hand we further saddle ourselves with debt in the form of bond issues.

Most of the opposition to the casinos was generated by an Augusta group led by John Baldacci. He would have us believe, among other things, that the casino was radically different from our state lotteries. Casinos target kids? Have you seen lottery scratch tickets lately? They have cartoon-like characters on them and are displayed right where kids can see them.

Both the casino and the lottery encourage gambling, but the Augusta mob justifies itself with the simple disclaimer, “Please play responsibly.” How nice to receive instant absolution and then deny the good people of Maine job opportunities with misinformation and innuendo.

We, as voters, need to realize that we can think for ourselves and stop listening to the pollution out of Augusta. The casino was and is a good idea.

One more thing to ponder in regards to Questions 1A, 1B and 1C. The governor was on TV less than 24 hours after the voting was done and pointed out that two-thirds of the people in Maine did not want 1A. Well, isn’t that true of 1B and 1C as well?
