The Sun Journal published an article entitled “Cats under fire” (Nov. 15). I am lucky to have a cat in my life, which I indeed care immensely for. It is very upsetting to read of the hideous and senseless abuse directed toward cats.

Acts perpetrated by individuals who were probably “drunk on whiskey and fooling around with a bow and arrow,” and the individuals who used BB guns to harm cats should most assuredly be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

I do agree with the article that “accidents happen when an overzealous hunter thinks he sees a deer and fires his gun before confirming the target.” When harm is caused by those accidents, the perpetrators also should be punished under our laws.

Maine is currently in deer hunting season with firearms. No hunter I know would set out in the morning with a BB gun in pursuit of a deer. A hunter would question how he or she would get venison with this ammunition.

Being one who is blessed with both cats and hunters in my life, I take offense to the inference made in this article that hunters are the problem. A large number of your subscribers are hunters, and one would not want to get the impression your publication is anti-hunting.

Please continue to expose those callous individuals who maliciously attack cats. Please do not disparage the good men and women in Maine who are licensed, law-abiding hunters and are exemplary good sportsmen.
