BUCKFIELD – Selectmen approved the Thomas Greenlaw Automobile recycling business on Gammon Road at their meeting Tuesday night, pending approval by the Department of Environmental Protection.

Greenlaw has satisfied all the requirements of the town but was asked by the board to put his hours of operation in writing. Those hours will be from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

When asked about noise level, Selectman Oscar Gammon said the town had no ordinance to limit noise. Chairman Lawrence Stanley asked him to keep noise at a minimum and be a good neighbor to which Greenlaw readily agreed.

In accordance with the new revised state law, Town Manager Cynthia Dunn presented a junkyard permit standards checklist to the board. In order to receive a permit, the applicant must answer yes to all of the questions on the checklist. Dunn is compiling packets for those applicants requesting any permits. This was approved by the board.

Dunn presented for signatures, letters to three violators to the junkyard ordinance that had been reported by townspeople. Those in violation were Roger Bennett and James Bishop on Depot Street and Alan Young on Shadd Hollow Road.

Bids were opened for electrical, interior carpentry and security fencing for the new highway garage. Project Engineer Eric Grondahl will contact the lowest bidders and make his recommendation to Dunn. The board gave her approval to award the bids based on Grondahl’s recommendations. The low bidders for electrical were Moelco at $19,925 and Hampton Electrical for $21,500. The low bidders for interior carpentry were Brad Barker of Northeast Construction for $8,965 and Finnen construction in Harrison for $12,300.

After some discussion the board voted to ask for a slide gate from the three lowest bidders for fencing. Those were Falls Fencing at $12,150, C and G Fence Co. for $13,000 and Burns Fence for $9,980. These bids would vary with the slide gate addition and barbed wire and tension wire for top and bottom.

The board approved Susan Bergeron for the Parks and Beautification Committee, but withheld her appointment to the Road Committee with the thought that if there were no other applicants, the board would disband the Road Committee.

There will be a special meeting of the tax assessors Wednesday at 8 p.m. to approve an abatement of $729.58 to Theodore and Debra Collette who had been over-assessed for several years due to a computer fluke.
