AUGUSTA – An Augusta man was sentenced to serve 10 years of a 40-year jail sentence for committing 125 burglaries. Glen Michaud was also ordered Friday to pay $138,000 in restitution to victims in 10 counties.

Counties Michaud hit were Cumberland, Franklin, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Oxford, Somerset, Sagadahoc, Kennebec and Waldo.

Kennebec and Somerset District Attorney Evert Fowle said there were no burglaries committed in Androscoggin County.

Michaud targeted town offices, including Carthage and Fayette, doctors’ offices, stores and other nonresidential establishments.

There were about 15 burglaries in Franklin County, including Jay and Phillips, and one in Oxford County, Fowle said.

Michaud, 41, had previously pleaded guilty to 69 burglaries on Oct. 31, and on Nov. 21 pleaded guilty to 56 more, Fowle’s said.

Michaud wanted to clear the slate, Fowle said, and confessed to the latter burglaries that date back to 1998.

“He’s a professional career burglar,” Fowle said.

Through his attorney, Michaud told the court in October that the burglaries were committed to help feed his heroin addiction, Fowle said.

Justice Donald Marden also ordered Michaud to serve eight years of probation after he is released from prison, Fowle said.

Detectives from Maine State Police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department conducted a “very painstaking” investigation, Fowle said, once police got a break Jan. 3 in a string of burglaries that began Oct. 31, 2002.

A woman responding to a burglar alarm at Bear Hill Variety in Phillips got a glimpse of a suspect and a car, Fowle said. About 77 minutes later, a vehicle matching the description was caught on a surveillance camera at J & S Convenience Store in Manchester.

A person in the vehicle cashed in lottery tickets, which had been stolen from Bear Hill Variety, Fowle said.

Michaud became a suspect in the case after stolen items that were found at a place he stayed, including a cell phone stolen from USA Concrete in Phillips.

On April 14, a burglary was interrupted in Monroe and evidence left behind led police to obtain search warrants.

Police executed eight search warrants on April 16, including five vehicles used to evade detection and Michaud’s motel room, Fowle said.
