GUILDHALL, Vt. (AP) – About 100 people turned out on a cold blustery day Saturday for the funeral services and procession of an Essex County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty.

Ruby Rainault, 54, died when her cruiser was struck by an oncoming truck as she attempted to turn around on U.S. Route 2 in Lunenberg.

Her death was the first in 20 years of an on-duty deputy. In 1982, a Chittenden County deputy was killed directing traffic.

State police are continuing to investigate the crash in which Rainault was killed, including why she was making a U-turn at the time. Many law-enforcement officers showed up for Saturday’s funeral.

About three dozen cruisers representing departments across the state – and at least one member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – participated in a procession from the center of town to neighboring Lancaster, N.H.

Rainault’s funeral was held in the Lancaster Elementary School.
