The unique documentary is the result of four years of following birds annual travels.

FARMINGTON – The Western Maine Audubon Society will present the nature film, “Winged Migration,” in two showings at 1:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec.7, at Narrow Gauge Cinema.

“For eighty million years,” said Jacques Perrin, the director of this film, “birds have ruled the skies, seas and earth. Each spring, they fly vast distances. Each fall, they fly back on the same routes. This film is the result of four years following their amazing odysseys, in the northern hemisphere and then the south, species by species, flying over seas and continents.”

The filmmakers used airplanes, gliders, helicopters and balloons to fly alongside, above, below, and in front of their subjects. They also used remote-controlled model gliders and helicopters and specially designed cameras to film migrating birds over landscapes and on sites where the use of manned aircraft would have been impossible.

Those who have wondered what it would be like to join, say, a flock of snow geese on their flight south from the high arctic to the Gulf Coast or European white storks heading for Africa by way of Spain or Turkey, have a chance to find out. The landscapes the birds traverse is as spectacular as the birds themselves.

Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased at Mickey’s Hallmark; Howard’s Rexall Drugstore, Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers and at Twice-Sold Tales. Tickets will also be available at the door.

These film showings are a benefit for the Western Maine Audubon Society. The proceeds will be used to support Western Maine Audubon’s programs, field trips and other activities.
