BOSTON (AP) – Pau Gasol finally got a win – and some revenge – against the Celtics.

Gasol scored 19 points and Lorenzen Wright added 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Memphis to 96-89 win over Boston on Monday night, the Grizzlies’ first victory against the Celtics in more than three years.

“It’s nice to finally get a win against them because I’ve been here three years and lost a few close ones,” Gasol said. “It’s really satisfying, especially after the season-opening loss.”

Memphis snapped a five-game losing streak against the Celtics and avoided being swept by Boston for the third consecutive season. The last time that the Grizzlies beat the Celtics was a 98-87 win on Nov. 26, 2000.

Paul Pierce finished with 26 points to lead Boston. Mike Miller had 10 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Memphis and Shane Battier added 12 points.

“It’s very frustrating,” Pierce said. “We’re stagnant too many times on offense. A lot of guys depend on me to make a play every time down the floor and that puts a lot of pressure on me. We have to stop depending on me so much.”

The Grizzlies, who have won two straight, avenged a season-opening 93-91 home loss in which Celtics point guard Mike James sank a 15-foot jumper with 1.8 seconds left to win the game.

Boston took a 72-71 lead on a putback by Raef LaFrentz early in the fourth quarter, but Wesley Person’s 3-pointer gave Memphis the lead for good at 74-72.

Battier came off the bench and scored seven points in a 11-4 run over the next five minutes to give the Grizzlies an 85-76 advantage.

“We have a lot of guys who can score and this was a great win for us because a lot of guys contributed,” Battier said.

The Celtics cut it to six when Pierce converted all three free throws after being fouled shooting a 3-pointer. But, moments later, Pierce fouled out on a reach-in beyond the 3-point line. Miller hit one of two free throws and Wright followed with a jumper to put the game out of reach.

“Unfortunately for them, Paul got in foul trouble and more importantly, he turned his ankle,” Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. “That was an important thing in our favor. They didn’t have their horse down the wire.”

Memphis trailed by as many as seven points in the first quarter, but took a 10-point lead on James Posey’s 3-pointer with 4:04 left in the first half before the Celtics cut the deficit to 44-43 at the break.

Notes: Memphis guard, and former Boston College star, Troy Bell made his return to the area, but did not play because of left knee tendinitis that has him on injured list. … Grizzlies point guard Jason Williams did not play because of back spasms. Earl Watson replaced Williams in the starting lineup. … Boston’s Jiri Welsch started his fifth consecutive game. … Wright returned after missing two games with a sprained right ankle.
