WILTON – Officials plan to review sample policies that notify citizens of the presence of sexual offenders when they meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the town office.

At the last selectmen’s meeting, resident Kaaron Wadsworth presented officials with a petition asking that the police department notify the community when a sex offender is in town. There are three known sex offenders in Wilton, including Wadsworth’s former husband Dennis Ayala.

Ayala was arrested for not registering as a sex offender when he returned to town recently. Wadsworth took it upon herself to notify the community about her ex-husband by putting up postings around town. The postings were removed, allegedly by Ayala.

Selectmen decided at their last meeting to table the issue until they had a chance to look into what other communities do. Officials said the Wilton Police Department has followed state and federal regulations concerning sex offenders thus far.

A public hearing will also be held on a facade grant application the town plans to send to the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. A citizen’s planning committee, formed in August after discussion about what keeps the town from getting businesses to locate here, recommended downtown area improvements. Committee members have said the way some buildings look makes a bad first impression on the town.

The total amount available to towns under the grant for such improvements is $350,000. Town Manager Peter Nielsen said he received seven estimates from business owners with ideas for possible projects. Nielsen said the town plans to apply for more than $150,000 for improvements to the buildings under the state grant. The deadline for the application is Jan. 15 and there are no local matching money requirements as with some other state grants.

In other business, officials will review a proposal from the Maine Rural Water Association to do a rate study for the Wilton Water Department. Selectmen will also hear a quarterly report from Recreation Director Frank Donald and consider placing a new streetlight at the intersection of Prospect Street and routes 2 and 4.
